Welcome to Serangoon Town
Hougang | Punggol | Sengkang
Historical Origins
The name 'Serangoon' is derived from the `Rangong' bird (of the stork species) which used to abound in the swamp around the Serangoon
River in the old days.
From post-World War II to the 1960s, the Serangoon area comprised of old Kampong settlements, villages and rubber plantations.
The population was mainly Chinese with a few Malays and Hindus. They lived in small compounds, growing their own fruit trees and poultry.
The major crops then were durian, coconut and some other fruits. Sembawang Rubber Plantation was located in Serangoon Garden.
In the early 1960's, electricity supply was first introduced to Serangoon North. From 1970 onwards, the primary roads servicing this
area, namely Serangoon Road and Yio Chu Kang Road, were widened and the housing area was further developed.

Location and Layout Serangoon Town is located in the North-Eastern Region of Singapore.
It is bounded by Yio Chu Kang Road to the north (bordering Sengkang Town),
Braddell Road and Bartley Road to the south (bordering Toa Payoh Town),
the Central Expressway (CTE) to the west (bordering Ang Mo Kio Town),
and Yio Chu Kang Road, Upper Serangoon Road and Upper Paya Lebar Road to the east (bordering Hougang Town).
Today, Serangoon Road is divided into two sections; the first extending from Selegie Road to MacPherson Road, and the second from
MacPherson Road northwards (also known as Upper Serangoon Road).

Transport Facilites With the advent of the
North-East MRT Line (NEL) via Serangoon MRT station, Serangoon residents now have a convenient, speedy and air-conditioned
ride into City Central. Also, switching between the NEL and the future Circle
Line (CCL) will be a breeze for Serangoon residents as the
CCL station will be located right next to the NEL station at the Serangoon Sub-Regional Centre.
Both stations will be inter-connected directly underground.
Road network wise, direct east-west connection between Serangoon Town and the eastern region is provided by the extended Bartley Road.

Housing Options
The planned total housing stock in the Serangoon area is about 41,000 units with
60% high density housing and 30% low density housing.

Town Amenities & Attractions
The existing Serangoon Town Centre offers a variety of facilities including retail outlets, HDB Area Office and the recently built
Braddell Heights Community Club.

The stadium is a popular jogging venue for residents and schools often hold their sports functions here. The swimming complex
also plays frequent host to many swimming meets and training sessions. It boasts an Olympic standard pool, a medium pool and a waddling pool.
